Presumptions...by Her... by Celeste

Various people have had various presumptions about me in my 20 years.

The range of the presumptions is fairly large.

The most annoying presumption I come cross about me is when I speak to a male student on the phone about the more technical terms of the 'Company who I work for's' Virtual Learning Environment. I know a lot about it. I do a lot of work on it. In fact it's safe to say that I am nearly an expert on it. I know more about it than 2 of the guys in IT, so when I get a male student on the line that doubts what I'm telling him is right it annoys me ever so slightly. I can't quite believe that there are still guys out there who think that because I'm a female and I have a fairly young sounding voice I know nothing about technical things. People like me can only be receptionists and eye candy.

The above has happened to me not once, not twice but thrice. In the end I had to get a male tutor who is the Course Director to tell these guys exactly what I had told them. I despair.

The most common presumption has to be that I went to University. All my friends are older than me and so is Tilesey. I tend to dread meeting new people as one of the first questions they ask me is what Uni I went to. That question opens up a can of worms for one as I have to (well I don't have to but I feel the need to) expain that I didn't go to Uni for various reasons. Blank looks tend to follow that one so I swiftly mention the most interesting thing about me which of course is that my parents were born in two different countries and that I was born in South Africa. Excellent.

Then there are the more disturbing presumptions. One from a few years back springs to mind instantly and one from yesterday in fact.

I was about 13 and it was the school holidays. I decided to take my youngest sister into town to treat her to a McDonalds and have a wonder around. The bus arrived in town and Little one and I got up to get off. So did many other people and Little one got a bit upset because she couldn't see me.

I immediatly pushed passed the other passengers to reassure her that I would never abandon her and that's when the crazy presumption spouted from an old lady.

The old lady uttered the scariest words I have ever heard to Little one ' Oh you just wanted your mummy didn't you. Well there you are she's with you now.' I actually turned around because I thought my Mum had appeared behind me. It then hit me that this old lady had presumed I was Little one's mum! I was shocked. I've always looked my age. How could she think that I was old enough at 13 to have a 5 yr old child? Little one and I still make jokes about that now.

Now for the most recent presumption. After He and I checked out of the B+B yesterday, he asked me if I wanted to see something scary. Feeling a little downhearted from not seeing any ghosts on the Ghost walk we went on the night before I threw caution to the wind and replied with "Yer go on then".

He produced the checkout bill and pointed to the 'Name' bit at the top. We had been booked in as Mr and Mrs Tilesey.

Not that Him and I are silly commitmentphobes but really we've only been together for 7 months and we're getting married off already!

So if I was actually what people presumed, I'd be an airheaded, young bird who went to university, has a 12yr old daughter and is married all before reaching 21.

Pretty impressive......

Just because I'm nosey, what VLE do you use?

Posted by: Mark at May 4, 2005 10:11 AM

It's quite basic as like most companies ours is a bit of a miser too.

It's Blackboard basic Edition release 6.

We're changing to a better one soon though which will be fab!

We use Blackboard 6.1 combination of different editions to give us various functionality over the basic edition. We will be moving to 6.3 in june as the word on the street says 6.2 is much good...

Coolio.

We're moving to a company that has just created VLE software, we use their software for a couple of other databases.

It's called SITs.

SITS as in the the student information system. Didn't know they had entered into the VLE market. Another word on the street is that M$ is also going to venture into the VLE market as well....

Yup spot on.

Well they haven't as yet. They are developing a VLE system and we're the lucky guinea pigs.

If it works it'll save us a lot of time doing the mundane bits of the job.
