Once again, the fate of dozens depended on my ability to stay cool under pressure. The building alarms rang out as they stared down at me from the staircase, their eyes burning into me, praying that I would be able to find a way to escape this inferno.
The girl, a blonde by the name of Kim, had already tried the emergency exit. No dice. I took over and gave it a shove, it didn't budge. Their eyes were unrelenting, panic was setting in, I could sense that the people were getting desperate, things were getting hot and someone needed to do something.
Another shove, harder this time.
The door did nothing.
I looked the girl squarely in the eyes ,"Stand back" I ordered.
I squared my shouldered, planted my left foot and put my whole body weight behind my right as it slammed into the fire door.
BANG
Daylight
We were through. The people already outside looked around as the noise hit them but already people started streaming out of the exit I had created. I was a hero, I walked out standing tall.
Shame it was just a fire drill...
..PHEW! I was on the edge of my chair then! That sounded like the beginning to a really good film! Even if it was only a drill..
